1. Gunmen Attack Black Maria In Court Premises, Free Six Criminals
Gunmen numbering about 20 on Thursday ambushed a Black Maria (vehicle conveying suspected criminals) billed to appear before a Plateau High Court in Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, and freed six of the 10 suspects conveyed in the vehicle and injured four persons in the court premises.
The incident, which occurred at about 10am, witnessed sporadic gunshots and pandemonium at the court premises, a development that aided the escape of the inmates brought from the Jos Prison for trial.
2. Women Strip Naked To Protest Incessant Killings
Hundreds of women from Southern Kaduna state, today July 23, took to the streets naked to protest the incessant killings recorded in the area.
Some of the protesting women wore black cloths in the protest that terminated at the palace of Atak Njei, Agwamatyap Palace (Sarkin Atyap palace) of Zangon Kataf local government area of Kaduna State.
The aggrieved women wept profusely, stating that the continued killings has taken away their breadwinners, parents, sisters, brothers, husbands and children, adding that today majority of them are widows.
3. Arewa Group Says No One Can Stop Tinubu From Being President
The reported presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu seems to have gotten the support of a northern-based group known as the Arewa Youths for Peace and Security (AYPS).
The group, in a statement on Thursday, July 23, said no one can stop Tinubu’s presidential ambition if it is destined by God, The Tribune reports.
The AYPS made the statement when reacting to remarks by the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, about the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader.
4. Nigerians React As President Buhari Visits Mali
President Muhammadu Buhari is currently in Bamako, Republic of Mali, today, on a one-day visit to help find a lasting solution to the country’s political crisis.
Buhari is meeting with fellow ECOWAS leaders led by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic for consultations towards finding a lasting solution to the political crisis in Mali.
Nigerians have taken to their social media pages to react to this news being the Buhari’s first visit outside Nigeria, post-Coronavirus while the country is facing a few scandals.
5. COVID-19 Cases In Lagos Likely To Peak In August
Lagos State Commissioner for health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has revealed that cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in the state is likely to peak in August.
Prof. Akin Abayomi while speaking at a press briefing at the Bagaulto Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Lagos said; “Based on postulations, COVID-19 cases are like to peak next month; we are hoping it peaks soon and the curve eventually gets flattened.”
Lagos state has been recording the highest number of cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) daily in Nigeria and is the state with the highest number of cases since the index case in the country.
6. U.S. Court Dismisses Fraud Case Against Woodberry
A United States court has dismissed the case against Olalekan Ponle, a Nigerian accused of multi-million dollar wire fraud.
Mr Ponle, popularly known as Woodberry, was arrested, alongside Ramon Abbas (Hushpuppi) in the United Arab Emirate on June 10 for multiple fraud charges after a raid by operatives of the Dubai crime unit.
