Execution Of Daniel Lewis Lee By US Federal Government Using Lethal Injection

On Tuesday, the government of the United States of America carried out its first federal execution since 2003. 47-year-old Daniel Lewis Lee was executed by lethal injection at 8:O7 am.

What did he do that made the US execute him?

On 11 January, 1996, Daniel Lee and his friend, Chevie Kehoe, went to the home of William Frederick Mueller, a gun dealer who the duo learned was in possession of large ammunitions, guns and cash. When they tried gaining entrance into the house located in Tilly, Arkansas, the door was locked as Mueller and his family, a wife and a daughter, were away. So Lee and Kehoe waited for the family to return and when they did, the invaders overpowered them, incapacitating Mueller and his wife Nancy, in the process. Rather than search for the items they were looking for immediately, they took the easy initiative by asking 8-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Powell, daughter of the Muellers, where the items were kept.

After finding $50,000 cash, guns and ammunitions, they shot the entire family with a stun gun which immobilized them. Then they went ahead to cover their heads with plastic bags tightened with duck tapes. This made the family suffocate to death. After the victims were confirmed dead, they stacked them in Kehoe's vehicle and drove to an Illinois creek. At the creek, they tied the bodies of Mueller, his wife and daughter with rocks, then pushed them into the nearby swamp. 5 months later, the bodies of the victims were found in a lake distance away in Russelville, Arkansas.

On 17 June, 1997, Chevie Kehoe, 47, was arrested. Subsequently, Daniel Lee was also arrested and almost a year later, his partner in crime plead guilty and was given three life sentences in 1999.

Daniel Lee's sentence wasn't as lenient as Kehoe's after he was convicted of 3-count first degree murder and was sentenced to death in May, 1999. After delays and appeals, his sentence was still sustained by the Supreme Court of the United States, and on 14 July, 2020, Lee was executed. This makes him the first man since to be executed by federal sentence since Louise Jones Jr's execution in 2003
