1. Buhari says lockdown won’t go longer than necessary
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that the lockdown put in place to reduce the spread of coronavirus in the country would not go longer than necessary.
The president said this in a statement issued ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu on Saturday, May 23, 2020.
In his Sallah message, the president told the Muslim faithful to keep their spirits up in spite of the challenges.
He said, “The lockdown measures would not go on longer than necessary because they would be reviewed from time to time to ease the increasing hardships on the people.
“I am well aware of the inconveniences these tough measures have brought on the lives of Nigerians, including limiting religious activities and gatherings in large numbers.
“No government would intentionally impose these tough and demanding measures on its citizens if it had a choice
2. Police to enforce total lockdown in Kaduna state
The Police Command in Kaduna State says it has intensified security coverage and enforcement of total lockdown during the Eid-el- Fitr celebration in the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige made the announcement in a statement issued on Saturday in Kaduna.
Jalige said that the command had drawn out elaborate operational strategies to ensure compliance of the total lockdown.
“This is in an order imposed by the state government to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic and intensive security coverage to checkmate the activities of criminal elements during Eid period throughout the state
3. Atiku says coronavirus is a test from God
Atiku urges Muslims to do their best both in action and in prayers to ensure that the world is healed of this deadly virus
and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections has said that the coronavirus outbreak in Nigeria is a test from God.
He said in Islam, Muslims are taught to believe that nothing happens without the permission of Allah.
In his Sallah message on Saturday, Atiku urged Nigerians to continue to abide by the guidelines issued by health authorities.

4. Workers threaten to shutdown National Assembly over new conditions of service
The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN has threatened to embark on strike that will shutdown the National Assembly if the revised Conditions of Service for its members are tampered with as being contemplated in some quarters.
National President of the Association, Muhammad Usman who expressed shock at the alleged plot by some persons to truncate the recently passed staff conditions of service being enjoyed by members has called on the Senate President, Ahmed Lawal and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to promptly intervene in the matter.
Usman explained that the new conditions of service were an initiative that the 5th National Assembly Service Commission presented to the 8th National Assembly and it has since been gazetted after passing through the required due process. He said that the new regulations have been in operation since May 2019 and are currently being domesticated at the State Houses of Assembly.
5. N-Power volunteers have been paid April stipends, says minister
Sadiya Umar Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, says the stipends of N-Power beneficiaries for the month of April have been paid.
She made this known in a statement issued on Saturday.
The minister had earlier promised that the stipends would be paid this week.
The statement quoted Farouq as saying the payments were made to N-Power beneficiaries from batch A and B after delays from the GIFMIS platform were rectified.
She said payment for the month of May is being processed, adding that the ministry is working on streamlining the programme.
“Last week I promised that the stipends would be paid this week. We encountered some delays on the GIFMIS platform but I can now announce that all N-Power beneficiaries from Batch A and B have been paid their April stipends,” she said.
“We are working hard to streamline the programme for greater efficiency and to provide opportunities for more Nigerian youths. Details will be provided as soon May stipend has been paid.”
